One-day trip: Taipei the First time

In Taipei City, you can explore and experience various things, from learning about history and culture to seeing nature and shopping in the vibrant downtown.
If you are planning to visit Taipei for the first time, this itinerary is perfectly suitable and optimal for conveniently traveling by public transport systems. However, you need an Easy card or iCard for MRT, bus, and at some tourist destinations.
To travel in a limited time, you also can register for the Taipei Fun Passes package at every MRT station. So, you can comfortably travel from 1 to 5 days for 180 – 700 NT.

Must-visit places in Taipei

1) Longshan Ancient Temple (龍山寺) – 8:00
Estimated visit time: 30-45 minutes

Longshan Temple is located in the heart of Taipei City and is a place that welcomes a lot of local and international tourists. The temple was built in the central area in 1738 and is recognized as a national cultural treasure. Many tourists visit the temple not only to admire the architecture and cultural space but also to pray for peace, success, work, study, and even love.

Opening time: 6:00 – 22:00 daily. (Free)

Opposite the temple is Bangka Park and traditional food stalls. Many of them are over 100 years old. You can stop by and have breakfast before continuing your journey.
Besides, if you are interested in temples, you can walk about 5 minutes to Qingshan Temple and Qingshui Temple. Both temples are famous.

How to get there: MRT Longshan Temple Exit 1 (BL10)
Usually, visitors will stay in the center of Taipei near Ximending or Taipei Main Station (Place of public transport). From these 2 areas, you can easily walk to the temple and get a glimpse into the life of the locals.

2) Bopiliao Historical Block (剝皮寮歷史街區)– 9:00
Estimated visit time: 30 – 45 minutes.

From Longshan Temple, you walk to the historic Bopiliao Historical building area built in the Qing Dynasty. The building has been restored and changed into a neighborhood learning place, which is also a popular check-in spot among young people.
Opening time: 9:00 – 18:00, from Tuesday to Sunday. (Closed on Monday) (Free)

3) National Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall (中正紀念堂) – 10:00
Estimated visit time: 30 – 45 minutes.

The Memorial Hall’s square is called Liberty Square after transitioning from one-party rule to modern democracy in the 1990s. The main white hall is enormous. There will be a ceremony to change the guard’s shift every hour from 10:00 to 16:00.
Opening time: 9:00 – 18:00, open daily. (Free)

How to get there: MRT Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall (G10 / R08)

If you are at Bopiliao Historical building, you can go back to MRT Longshan temple to MRT Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall station (G10). However, you have to change to the green line at Ximen station (BL11 / G12)

4) Jin Feng Braised Pork Rice (金峰魯肉飯) – 11:00
Estimated visit time: 30 – 60 minutes.

Jin Feng Braised Pork Rice restaurant is known for Taipei’s most famous braised pork rice. The food prices are pretty soft and range from 20 to 50 NT/dish.

It is very close to Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall MRT station (G10 / R08). So, after visiting the Memorial Hall, you can walk here for lunch.

Opening time: 11:00 – 01:00 the next morning

5) National Palace Museum (國立故宮博物院) – 12:45
Estimated visit time: 2 – 3 hours

The National Palace Museum is worth visiting for its rich history, culture, and treasures. The building has 3 floors and many galleries for visitors to learn about the history, culture, and art.

Opening time: 9:00 – 17:00 from Tuesday to Sunday. Closed 2nd.

Entrance fee: 350 NT/person.

How to get there: From Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall MRT (G10 / R08) take the red line MRT to Shilin MRT station (R16) – exit 1 and go to take the bus in front of the MRT station.

Then, you can get on many buses:
• Bus R30 or S18 (stop in front of the museum building)
• Bus 815, 304, or 300 (stop at the downhill museum gate)
• Bus 255, S18, S19, or M1 (stop opposite the museum).
The total travel time from the city center to the museum is about 40 minutes.

6) Taipei 101 – 16:30
Estimated visit time: 2 – 3 hours.

You can visit the tallest building in Taiwan, Taipei 101, to admire panoramic views of Taipei City. Taipei 101 is a complex center, including a shopping mall, offices, and a restaurant area.

The building is located in the most expensive Xinyi area in Taipei. So, there are surrounded by many shopping centers such as Eslite and Breeze. You can visit, shop, and have dinner there or continue to the Ximending area.

Opening time: Weekdays 11:00 – 19:00. Weekend: 10:00 – 19:00.

Observatory deck fee: 600 NT/person.

How to get there: MRT Taipei 101 (R3)
From National Palace Museum, you can get on bus number R30 on the B1 floor in front of the museum or go downhill to get bus number 815, 304, 300, 255, S18, S19, or M1 to return to Shilin MRT station (R16). Then, take the red line MRT to Taipei 101 MRT station (R3)

7) Ximending Pedestrian Street – 18:30

Ximending is a very famous Taipei neighborhood. Every night, many street artists come here to perform, attracting many young Taiwanese and international tourists.
Here, you can check in with the iconic Red Building (The Red House), built in 1908. If you want to go inside, you must arrive before 20:00.

In addition, you can visit Taipei Thien Hau Temple, located hidden in this busy area. You can try street foods such as fried food, noodle, wonton, milk tea, ice cream, and so on. Also, you can try one of many Mala hotpot restaurants in the area.
How to get there: MRT Ximen (G12 / BL11)

You can take the red line MRT to Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall MRT Station (G10 / R08). Then, change to green line MRT to Ximen station (G10) – exit 1, you will immediately meet The Red House Building.
